Has anyone had trouble running X when not root. As a non root user I
get a server crash with the following output (in its entirety) but no X:

Thanks for all of the suggestions! What eventually happened was I did the ftp install
over again and everything worked. Sadly I didn't learn anything from this except if
at first you don't suceed swear at the blank screen and start again.

directory at Redhat.. a HOWTO is out there also.. I have been running this

sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux that allowed you to set it per the type of serial

The RedHat 4.3 release included a file which listed the contents of
every RPM on the CD. I found this to be incredibly useful and am
somewhat dismayed to find that it isn't in the 5.0 release. I presume

it. I created a dos 6.22 boot disk with loadlin and my zImage on it. I
typed "loadlin linuz root=/dev/hda2" where linuz was my zImage. It did not

Nope, can't ping it from other machines. The netmask is set correctly, and
so is the localhost.
I can ping the router by IP.
Situation is no different at this point. When I get home again, I'll try
swapping NICs again...maybe it has something to do with the 3Com...

I got it from /pub/contrib/i386 from RH's ftp site. After you unpack it,
you can execute it (as root) with /usr/sbin/netkbd tty3 eth0. or ppp0 if

In fact, I used to face similar problems with S3 Virge / MetroX when I run
Netscape 4.04 too. The problem was solved when I switched over to XFree 3.3.1.
It's apparently a documented bug with the MetroX server for S3 Virge.

I am trying to customise the colours in jed and xjed 0.98-42 and getting some
weird results.
"jed -bg black" will load jed in a colour xterm and load into jed a new file
called black rather than set the background colour ! Same result with "fg"
etc.

i was having the same problems as you... it took 2 mins for just about any
command to execute (on a p166) well it turned out that i had specified a
non-existing name server...
as soon as i changed it my problems where solved
