I haven't had a lot of experience with it yet, but I'm using an MGE Pulsar ES2 (aka Pulsar Desktop 220+), which I aquired at CompUSA. It was pretty cheap (as UPS go), and MGE has a Linux version of the control software on their web page. It comes with a serial cable, so you don't have to build your own. So far it seems to work well. (I hope so, there is a thunderstorm as I write, and my electric utility is notoriously unstable). MGE has some pretty nice looking software to use SNMP to control several systems connected to the same UPS, but unfortunately the Linux version can not control other systems, it can only talk directly to the UPS or act as a client. See <http://www-merlin-gerin.eunet.fr/products/pdt120/smallups/desk/desk.htm> for more details.
