I am trying to set up my Linux box to use my PacBell ISDN with ppp.
However, everytime I connected to PacBell, my modem hangs up before any
authentication is performed. Can you help me? Thank you.

howto i do not get it. But in rh6.0 I just copied the HOWTO dir to linuxPC.

While Installing I Kept 500 M RAM, because it was not taken more than
that. But after installation it Accepted to boot with 2G RAM, but it
detected only 1 G.
By default it is 1 G, while installing it is not taking that much.

Is your kernel compiled with support for 2GB? It's 1GB by default, I

I'm still trying to wean myself off the Windoze habit fully and setting up a
Linux workstation for a desktop machine.
Build is Sis 5326 (from memory) video card running HelixGnome. The X server
being run is the SVGA one.
Now when I am running at 800x600 paging between the virtual des

not TWAIN since the standard wasn't very well designed, it was OS
specific. There is something called SANE at www.mostang.com/sane that
should have everything you'll need. I even saw support for one of those
logitech scanman 256 handscanners, I couldn't get mine to work though:)

2.4. There are also glibc (optimized for 2.4) and tux patches if you rebuild
the srpm.

ipchains is fine with multiple interfaces, you can specify rules by
interface or network address. The two firewall approach is probably over
the top, and potentially more troublesome.
You might save yourself a lot of money if you set up your front firewall
with three interfaces instead of two. You're also less likely to have
problems with weird applications going through one firewall than two.

Linux (and thus Red Hat) supports ISA SCSI just fine. I use an Adaptec ISA SCSI on my
UMAX scanner. Many older scanners came with cheap Adaptec cards (which are the way to
go, IMHO).
You'll have to figure out exactly what that card is in order to know for sure that you
can use it.

(almost an entire Class C). Make sure you have IP Aliasing enabled in the
kernel. Then just make them eth0:1, eth0:2, etc. Have fun with it!

Yes. It's called IP aliasing. I don't have time to go into details but there's a
HOW-TO on it. Works like this:
eth0 192.168.0.1
eth0:1 192.168.0.2
eth0:2 192.168.0.3
eth0:3 192.168.0.4
etc.
Every distro does it differently. In red hat do it in Linux conf - mine says something
like "IPs..

They have rpms or tar.gz files of everything you may need. It may take you a
few minutes to delve through all the stuff there, but if you know what you
are after (version, package, etc.) it shouldn't be too bad.

Back in the annals of time (well, around 5 years ago, at least) I used to
use a time app that would take a list of time servers, query each one in
turn, and then work out the best time from the average and set the clock
accordingly. If anyone anywhere can remember what this might have been
called

Just be careful to set accurately on what partitions to install what. You

I have redhat 7.0 running on my computer and I am happy with it. I only have you find
a way to do the following things before I can remove windows
1) How can I copy mixed music cd's??

I forgot to ask in previouse email about the size of the iso. Do anyone
know why iso is 675mb for the first disc and 670mb for second? When I
burned them on my cd I noticed the size is within 640mb size so what
happened to the rest of 30 to 35mb? My installation seems to come on
without a hitch

I downloaded 2 RH 7.0 iso's through 56k connection. I see it was
labeled as 7.0-i386-disc1.iso and 7.0-i386-disc2.iso. When I installed
them in my 3rd computer for evaluation before I would install over my RH
6.2 in my main computer, it only needed one (disc1). Why is it labeled

Umm, One other major difference. SYSV uses STREAMS. Yeah, all that other
stuff is cosmetic. BSD was the first to implement IP in the kernel (as
well as ethernet). SYSV came up with STREAMS as the way to not be trapped
into IP.
