there´s already upstart 0.6.6-2 installed instead of sysvinit.

Yes indeed. Upgrading from Wheezy to Squeeze yields a
working system. No special adjust to grub or to X is
needed.

This machine has an audio chip on the mainboard and two
USB audio adapters.

spite of alsa being OK.
The only realistic strategy in the long term is to reconsider the
sound system in general. Simplify and consolidate the design.
Otherwise obscure bugs will consume years of human time and sound
will remain a fragile patchwork.
