One further workaround:
The 32bit xpdf in the upstream precompiled binary package works fine on
Jessie.
http://www.foolabs.com/xpdf/download.html

No install for this xpdf, eg just extract/run ./xpdf myfile.pdf
I cannot run the 64bit upstream. Unsatisfiable dependency on libpng14
