Installed kernels do not interfere. And DON'T remove the last kernel
that you can boot or you will have nothing to boot.
The removed 2.6.39 kernel should not have been visible in grub

Right. It automatically shows the grub screen when there is more than
one partition with an operating system. Shift is only needed when grub
stays hidden, which it might do if there is only one operating syste

Please note that, unlike what yous said, I don't have to press and hold
the Shift key when the BIOS screen is visible in order to load GRUB.It

I'm afraid there is no 2.6.38-9 kernel visible on GRUB. Only the

That is the standard kernel. I think the patched kernel is called
2.6.38-9 in the grub list. Do you see it? If not then it was not

I just typed [sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=a1] (where a1 is a brightness value,
for example if you type F4.B=80 you get a medium brightness, if you type
F4.B=01 you get a very satisfying result--this is what I typed) Everything is
