No problem. This should do it in synaptic:

Reload
Mark All Upgrades
Apply

This should install all upgrades, including the packages gnome-power-
manager and linux-image... and linux-headers... from the ppa you just
added.

After shut down and boot the hotkeys for brightness should work. If not then 
check with:
uname -a
in a terminal that you are running the kamal~mjgbacklight kernel

You can select what kernel to boot into by holding the shift key while
booting. (Press and hold immediately after the BIOS screen becomes
visible)

Depending on your luck (or rather your exact hardware) the patched
kernel from Kamal will just work or do strange things with your
backlight. Especially check whether it still works after suspend.
