Installed 14.04 on second drive from CD with primary disc unconnected..
Boot off of secondary disc with primary disconnected
using default 14.04 settings and
driver and the system comes up with xfce properly.
Attempted to boot off secondary disk with grub with both
connected but that failed.
Ok. Rewiring to have the secondary disk only I was able to
boot of secondary and that worked.
Rewired back to 2 disks, primary as primary in the wiring.
In grub booted into recovery mode.
Used the dpkg option to get updated and remount as rw.
Got into root shell from grub extended manu and di
All back to normal running nVidia drivers.
For 14.04 ignore advice about /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Irrelevant.
Instead, boot into recovery mode in the grub menu.
Go into a shell (root shell) from the grub recovery menu.
# make read-write
mount -o remount,rw /
# remove nvidia packages.
apt-get purge 'nv
I don't know why things went wrong on the minor kernel upgrade, but
my problem is fixed so this bug can, I suppose, be closed.

AFAIK the boinc from the berkeley website is not oriented toward
running as user 'boinc' so there might be issues transitioning
from the Ubuntu release version to the berkeley version.

As a sanity check I booted from the first live CD I came across in a stack
(Ubuntu 10.10)
and its sound settings panel says "Internal Audio 1 Output 1 Input Analog
Stereo Duplex"
and once I turned off 'mute' there the speakers worked fine.
So rebooted into 12.04. No sound.
Same alsa-restore
The internal audio ports on my SuperMicro board don't show up at all after a
recent 12.04 update.
Worked earlier on 12.04.
Now no audio, no /usr/share/pulseaudio directory, ...

So sound disappeared at the next reboot after July 18.

I removed oss4-base and there were no dependencies, indicating it was entirely
my fault
from the beginning. The offending oss4 files are gone from modprobe.d and
a reboot shows sound is working.
dpkg.log.1 shows the install on July 17.

Does not show up like a USB device on my desktop but File Manager shows it

Another machine here, x86_64. UPgraded 11.10->12.04->12.10 just now, and the
launcher bar
works perfectly with gnome classic. What the critical differences are
that make one machine not have a usable launcher bar is a mystery to me.

The Langdale ppa installed (via software update), and trying Galaxy Nexus which
is set to mtp.
On connecting usb cable
a photo-reader connection starts up and when I close that there is no device
visible, no
usb device under /media. No joy. I guess I am doing something wrong? reboot
required
Installed 12.10 yesterday and the Touro drive will not mount. Tried with uas
allowed, it failed.
Changed to blacklist uas, rebooted. Plugged in Touro and again it would not
mount. Fail.
