Denis refers to Gnome Classic (and Gnome Classic (no effects)) with that bar on the bottom. The workspace boxes at the right of that bar show up for me and work properly, showing the active apps. But the minimized apps never show along the bottom.
I tried all 3 nvidia proprietary drivers available through the software-updater /system-settings. Highest numbered 304.51. None made the slightest difference. Minimized apps disappear from the launcher bar at the bottom but are still live. Which is quite annoying. So it's impossible to usefully minimize things.
