OK, it sounds as if there is a permission issue with your image. It may
allow root only 'exec' permissions on the 2nd stage loader or somewhere in
the path to the boot loader. Two ways to fix this; you could walk the
tree of your image and make sure that there are world read-execute
permission

The way I do it is to compile the new kernel, edit /etc/lilo.conf and add
the new info to point to this new kernel but keep the info for the
original kernel and change it's label to something like linux-orig.
Run lilo and then when you boot yo ucan choose the new or old kernel at
the lilo prompt.

kept support for your modules? You could try 'make oldconfig' in
your /usr/src/linux directory to tell us what you did--just
don't save anything. Maybe we can catch something in the kernel
