Thanks. This worked well for me. The key seems to be naming the virtual
terminals it will run on. If I don't, X locks up the system hard.

I'm curious to know where you found this documented. Try as I might, I
couldn't find any information on this anywhere. Any pointers would be very
helpful in digging a little deeper into gdm.
