[Bug 389175] [NEW] transmission marks utorrent peers as non-downloadable

2009-06-18 Thread chuck adams
Public bug reported:

using transmission to download large file (15GB) with a number of peers and
seeders online.
I find that all seeders using uTorrent 1.8.2 are marked with 'd' for would
download if allowed.

If I move over to my kubuntu 8.04 system and use ktorrent, the same sites will
be shown
as downloadable and segments will download.

I'm 3 days into a download, so don't want to start over. Is there some set of
parameters
that I am not setting correctly to allow transmission to connect to and
download from
systems running uTorrent 1.8.2?

I'm using unmodified version of transmission with all the default settings
except that
I have resricted uploads to 2KB/s to up the download rate.

thanks in advance,

chuck

p.s. as download progresses number of peers and seeders drops and if I pause
and
restart the file the number of peers and seeders comes back to a larger number.
Seems to be a performance issue IMHO. But what do I know?

ciao.

If I take the same torrent from the same tracker and start it up
with Ktorrent under kubuntu 8.04, I get an order of magnitude
greater speed in the download. Looking at the peer/seeder list,
the same ones in Ktorrent allow downloads while the same ones
in transmission do not.

I understand what you are saying about the request/denial protocol,
but just wanted to figure out why the two different behaviors that
show up in this test. I finally abandoned Transmission for
Ktorrent due to the time savings that I get by restarting the
download on a different machine.

Thanks for your response and time.

[Bug 386579] Source pdf file for pdftk conversion problem

2009-06-13 Thread chuck adams
http://www.mediafire.com/?v11ec9m8u1i

The above is the PDF file that if I
do a pdftk file cat 1-endS output out.pdf

does not rotate 180 degrees per page as
advertised.

The file was created by
1. scanning individual pages with xsane and
   saving as .ps
2. converting each .ps file to .pdf with ps2pdf
3. then pdftk *pdf cat output source.pdf
which results in the file on mediafire.com

Documentation says that 1-endS should also rotate 180 degrees. I tried
the D rotation and it did 180 degrees also.

Jean,

I tried the above.

With steps in part 1 with sudo apt-get the install gets an error
message about a "corrupted filesystem tarfile".

Steps in part 2 with wget installs but upon reboot I get the X11
failure to come up. When I did a

sudo apt-get remove nvidia-glx-new gives an error message

/usr/lib32/libGL.so.1 does not exist.

A "ls /usr/lib32" gives an error message the the lib32 directory
does not exist.

Since, nvidia-glx-new works on the 32-bit version (i386) of 8.04
and not the amd64, I am thinking that it is a problem with the
/usr/lib32 missing modules..

Hope this helps.

ciao,

Chuck

[Bug 222270] [NEW] [Hardy 8.04] nvidia-glx-new adept error amd64

2008-04-25 Thread Chuck Adams
Public bug reported:

April 26, 2008 01:30 UTC

Installed 8.04 amd64 release.

System detects nvidia video and asks to install
nvidia-glx-new from non-free. Downloads and
then adept-batch displays error message:

There was an error committing changes.
Possibly there was a problem downloading
some packages or the commit would break
packages.

System has ECS Elitegroup GeForce 7050M-M
motherboard with NVidia GeF7050 graphics.

I have added several screenshots to

I am not able to go back to 219604 for the April 14th
daily-live install as I did not save the disc. Please
close that report as 70 is the current problem and
the same as previous bug.

[Bug 223526] [NEW] nvidia-glx-new from bug #222270

2008-04-28 Thread Chuck Adams
Public bug reported:

Couldn't find 70 in bugzilla.

After todays report and emails, the problem with bzip2
and corrupted files seems to be fixed.

Now Adept Batch does download and install
nvidia-glx-new.

Upon reboot, X server comes up with black screen and
the X symbol then disappears and system goes back
to terminal mode. Shows system startup up until
/etc/rc.local is done (it does an exit 0) and the system
seems to be in a loop seeming to start X and fail and
restarts

I did a reboot with system recovery and /etc/X11/xorg.conf
looks to be exactly as that in another system (amd64) that
is running a daily-live from April 10.
uname -a gives

Thu Apr 10 12:47:45 UTC 2008 x86_64 time stamp.

xorg.conf are exactly the same in both systems.

For failed system, esc to get to grub and do a system
option to reset X11 and system goes back to the low
resolution display.

Looks like problem is almost fixed, but not quite.

Thanks,

Chuck

William,

I have both gnuplot-nox and gnuplot-x11 installed. It is some problem
with

set terminal epslatex

and then using splot to create a 3D image. I found one of the
sample programs that worked. Looks like you have to do a set output
to create the image. I'm working on it.

The documentation is needing some examples with images in it instead
of the demos showing everything IMHO.

No, problem. Thanks for the feedback and I'll be working on the issue
with my images.

[Bug 126886] gnuplot install fails to install gnuplot

2007-07-18 Thread Chuck Adams
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnuplot

Using Adept Manager:
   1. Install gnuplot
   2. sudo find / -name gnuplot

returns the following

/usr/lib/gnuplot
/usr/local/share/gnuplot
/usr/local/libexec/gnuplot
/usr/share/omf/gnuplot
/usr/share/doc-base/gnuplot
/usr/share/doc/gnuplot
/usr/share/gnuplot

all of which are either directories and one is an ASCII file.

The version in the repository is version 4.0 and the latest
from sourceforge is 4.2. I installed it, but it doesn't
find the fonts, so I'm looking for help.

Thanks in Advance and I'll be glad to try any fixes.

Running kubuntu 7.04 with all the latest updates on an
AMD 64 single processor system.

Again, thanks,

Public bug reported:

Firefox 3 has a bug when used to do my editing on http://www.gutenberg.org/
as an editor.

So, I did the remove firefox-3.

Did an install for firefox-2 using adept-manager. No firefox.

sudo find / -name firefox

returns

/usr/share/firefox
/usr/share/bug/firefox
/usr/lib/firefox
/etc/firefox

but no /bin/firefox

Missing binary in install?

FYI

I went to firefox 3 web site to download daily build.
Got it OK, but there are no instructions on how to
install and no install script in the created firefox directory
from the tarball. bash returns a program not found for
the executables when I do ./script_name

Hope this helps.

Chuck

[Bug 201661] [NEW] kubuntu 8.04 alpha 6 daily-build fails amd64

2008-03-12 Thread Chuck Adams
Public bug reported:

Downloaded daily builds for March 11 and March 12, 2008 alpha-6
Hardy Heron.

Both fail at boot at the first screen to select install, test CD,
test memory,

No arrow key movement of highlighted text nor function key
either. This done with both ps/2 keyboard and USB keyboards
that worked previously.

AMD Athlon 64 dual-core system with 4GB main memory.
Is working with March 10th daily-build from

http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/unbuntu/daily-live/current/hardy-desktop-
amd64.iso

used

wget -c http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ to download the image as previously on

[Bug 201712] [NEW] Hardy 8.04 alpha-6 boot error

2008-03-13 Thread Chuck Adams
Public bug reported:

Started having problems with alpha-6 March 11th, 12th,
and today's March 13th daily-live/current ISO images.

amd64 install on amd64 x 2 system hangs after
first screen selection comes up but the language
select screen does not pop us. Arrows and keyboard
do not do anything.

Thinking that amd64 iso was the issue I downloaded
the i386 iso image and the same thing happens.

Something changed from the March 10th daily build
and the March 11th and all following ISO CD images.

I'll keep downloading each evening, as it takes me
only 15 mins to download and burn an image and keep
trying.

Thanks for any help and if there is a better forum to
file these bug reports, please let me know.

kubuntu 8.04 alpha-6 amd64 current daily-live ISO image

Would attach info if I could get the system to boot far
enough to run commands.

[Bug 201712] Re: Hardy 8.04 alpha-6 boot error

2008-03-13 Thread Chuck Adams
March 14, 2008 alpha-6 daily build still has problem.

This is a very critical bug, IMHO.

Is there a way to take the March 10 build and move one or
more files and create a new disc?

TIA

Adam,

Thanks for the email.

For both beta 8.04 and the daily build from last night (March 28)
upon install 'gcc' is indeed loaded by default. I have not done
an install of gcc by any means, I promise. :-)

which gcc returns

/usr/bin/gcc

and a compile of a test program with

#include

returns an error that stdio.h is not found, since libc6-dev is not
installed.

I think that gcc and libc6-dev should be installed by default,
since there is a high probability that users of Linux will either
develop code (such as myself) or possibly add packages
from other sources that require the use of gcc. But the
decision is up to you and the team. Just announce
the standard disposition of gcc and we'll do the rest.

Thanks,

Chuck

[Bug 205800] Re: sox for kubuntu 8.04 beta

2008-03-27 Thread Chuck Adams
installed daily-live for March 27, 2008 kubuntu 8.04

downloaded sox-14.0.1.tar.gz from sox.sourceforge.net

did the sudo apt-get install for gcc, libc6, libc6-dev, g++, gfortran,
alsa-oss, liblame-dev,
libvorbis-dev and check of execution of ./configure will see if that is
everything

./configure
make
sudo make install

this new version of sox winds up in /usr/local/bin/

This causes a problem conflict with the old version. I will redo everything
from
scratch on the next daily-live and complete all the steps necessary to get it
working. the binary does work on the .aiff files that I have and that is what I
needed.

[Bug 205800] Re: sox for kubuntu 8.04 beta

2008-03-27 Thread Chuck Adams
went to another system, amd64 x 2, and installed March 27, 2008 daily-
live.

Here is what I did to get sox up and running:

sudo apt-get install gcc libc6 libc6-dev linux-libc-dev libsndfile1
libsndfile1-dev
sudo apt-get install libgsm1 libgsm1-dev libflac-dev libogg-dev pkg-config
sudo apt-get install g++ gfortran alsa-oss liblame-dev libvorbis-dev

wget http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/sox/sox-14.0.1.tar.gz

tar xvzf sox-14.0.1.tar.gz
cd sox-14.0.1
./configure
make
sudo make install
cd src
./tests.sh

and all the output from the tests.sh shows ok

there is another ./testall.sh but it doesn't give enough information to
determine if it is testing anything of importance.

The new sox is installed in /usr/local/bin/ and runs everything that
I used to do in the kubuntu 7.10 system, so my guess is that it is
running as advertised.

Hope this helps and I do understand that with beta new code is
not introduced, but the old version should require the same steps
to get back to its old self.

FYI and thanks,

Chuck

[Bug 208100] [NEW] cp in 8.04 is not case sensitive

2008-03-27 Thread Chuck Adams
Public bug reported:

I ran the following test in kubuntu 8.04 from the daily-live distro of March

suspect it is true of most of previous distros.

mkdir old new

cd ..

do
cp $i new
done

ls new

shows that the upper case filenames are also copied!!

This is a serious bug. Don't know it is due to bash or the
cp command itself.

Attached is typescript file for 'script' command. It is ugly, but I
think you can see what is going on.

This was done with March 10, 2008 daily-build of Hardy Heron 8.04
alpha-6. System is an HP Slimline dual AMD 64 based system.

Pascal,

Here is what I did:

wget -O foo2zjs.tar.gz http://foo2zjs.rkkda.om/foo2zjs.tar.gz

tar xvf foo2zjs.tar.gz

cd foo2zjs

make

./getweb 1020

sudo make install

sudo make install-hotplug

sudo make cups

sudo lpadmin -d HP_LaserJet_1020

And this made everything work. I went to the web page above
to download the package as they say to not use the package
that you distribute. Guess they don't trust you.

How about an install script with the above to go and get the
1020 driver. The system detected the printer and did everything
else.

I'll file a bug report to have libc6-dev installed automatically
with the system as gcc is installed, but without the headers it
is useless. I'd have thought the development group would jump
up and down about this oversite.... :-)

ciao dude,

[Bug 211628] [NEW] [hardy] apple wireless keyboard setup

did a reboot, and still no joy in Mudville.

Looking for procedure to get the keyboard to function in 8.04

bluetooth icon, when it brings up Konquerer used to show the keyboard, but
that disappeared with the above steps. So all the old docs online don't help

[Bug 206955] [NEW] libc6-dev should be loaded by default IMHO

2008-03-25 Thread Chuck Adams
Public bug reported:

since gcc is automatically installed by default from the desktop
distribution for amd64 and i386, i would have thought that the
header files normally used by all C-programmers would also
be loaded by default.

how about libc6-dev and(?) linux-libc-dev installed by default.
this eliminates considerable time by new arrivals to kubuntu
and ubuntu that are experienced C-programmers and who
would later help on projects C-related.

humbly submitted,

thanks

[Bug 113519] Re: font not found with lmodern

2007-06-18 Thread Chuck Adams
I'm using kubuntu 7.04 (feisty) on an AMD 64 system.

An "sudo find / -name lmodern.sty" returns no value, thus lmodern.sty is
not installed with tetex and related font support packages in apt-get.

Is lmodern.sty installed in ubuntu and not kubuntu? I also removed
~/.texmf-var to see if that helped and got no results. Any help
on this problem in a timely fashion is greatly appreciated.
I am working on a large document for NEC2.

Thanks. Found it after the postings and did not get a chance to
go back and note it. You may remove my postings if you would like.

I'm fighting a problem with finding all the .sty files for
pst-3dplot. I installed ubuntu 7.04 on another machine
and it works fine. My installation of kubuntu 7.04 does not
work and I am working through all the problems to determine
if the install has a small problem or if I did something myself.

Thanks for the work.

ciao dude,

[Bug 107160] [apport] wish8.4 crashed with SIGSEGV in UDrawChar()

2007-04-16 Thread Chuck Adams

Binary package hint: tk8.4

Just compiled and installed "xcircuit" and started it up. Placed one symbol on
the

symbol when the SIGSEGV occurred.

I will check the link to see if it is the libtk8.4.so vs libtk8.4.so.0
problem.

[Bug 90873] install screen exceeds display area

2007-03-09 Thread Chuck Adams
Public bug reported:

Upon start up of installation, the window exceeds the display
area in the vertical direction, thus the buttons at the bottom
of each window are not visible. Resize does not work.

This is for the herd-5 release for 7.0

feisty-desktop-amd64.iso

The system is an HP Pavilion a1132n with a VISON 1280x1024 LCD
display.

No keystroke combination works to resize and without root access
no way to work on X-windows.

[Bug 93586] /usr/bin/esd missing with evolution

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

install evolution via

evolution &

a number of

/usr/bin/esd missing/not found messages occur

problem was fixed with

sudo apt-get install esound

hope this helps although I know evolution is not supported
directly under kubuntu

I think is just a case of adding the dependency in case esound
has not been installed

[Bug 93754] k3b reports problems with cdrecord

2007-03-19 Thread Chuck Adams
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: k3b

Bring up k3b to make a data CD disc.

Upon building up the data files to go to the disc then select
the "burn" option. K3b returns an error with the following message:

cdrecord returned an unknown error (code 255)
Unknown error 255
If you are running an unpatched cdrecord version...
...and this error also occurs with high quality media...
...and the k3b FAQ does not help you...
...please include the debugging output in your problem report.

In adept I note that you have replaced cdrecord with whodim.
If you are going to do this, please make sure that k3b works
with it as a number of us I am sure are locked into k3b for
burning CDs and DVDs.

Went back and tried k3b as root and it works as advertised.
Sorry about that. I do believe that k3b should run as a regular
user and be allowed access to the CD and DVD devices if they
are not busy... IMHO, but what do I know?

[Bug 542187] [NEW] 10.04 daily-live and broadcom wireless

2010-03-19 Thread chuck adams
Public bug reported:

installed lucid 10.04 daily-live for March 18, 01:42 time shown on the
files at cdimage.ubuntu.com

System is a lenovo S10 netbook with intel atom processor with 2GB ram
and 160GB disc.

system->Administration->Synaptic Software Manager and installed bcmwl-
kernel-source

system->Administration->Hardware Drivers to activate broadcom STA
drivers

wireless interface isn't recognized.

eth0 is working fine. so can access Internet is there is a fix online.
There was some message during installation (which doesn't show up
long enough to get all the info) about kernel.org for drivers, but can't
get enough info to get to the subdirectory needed, even by going
to kernel.org

thanks,

chuck

[Bug 453261] [NEW] karmic daily-live 2009-10-16 amd64 disc test

2009-10-16 Thread chuck adams
Public bug reported:

when running disc test on a newly generated CD from the distro,
I get a blank screen with no information displayed. this has
been ongoing for some time now.

can provide hardware details if necessary:
dual core amd 64 with nvidia display

memtest works fine.

when running disc test it spends time accessing the CD
with the activity light almost continuous and then acts
like it finished the test as reboots the disc.

[Bug 415472] Re: Broadcom 43xx wifi not working in Kubuntu Karmic alpha 4

2009-10-18 Thread chuck adams

Using lenovo s10 netbook. Has Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g (rev 01)
hardware for wifi.

Install karmic-netbook-remix iso for today oct 18, 2009 dated 03:05
o passed disc test on thumb drive
o runs live without showing wifi
o do an install

tried each of the following as recommended by several Internet finds
using google.com

1. sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source
shutdown system
reboot still shows no wifi interface
sudo apt-get install --reinstall-kernel-source (this recommended at one
site as a fix)
reboot and still no wifi

2. went to http://www.broadcom.com/support/802.11/linux_sta.php
downloaded README.txt and tarball for 32-bit drivers

 a. first ran lsmod | grep "b43\|ssb\}wl" and got several listings with
b43 and ssb (no wl)
did the rmmod b43 and rmmod ssb

 b. sudo echo "blacklist ssb" >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf(BTW I
had to sudo chmod 777 to get this to work)
was getting permission denied even though rwx
for root allowed --- strange IMHO
  sudo echo "blacklist b43" >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

upon rebooting system later ssb is still shown by lsmod and check
shows that PPID of init (PID 1) uses it.

 c. sudo apt-get install build-essential (via eth0)

 d. make
  sudo make install

these two steps for broadcom source using Makefile they
provide

 e. shutdown

 f. reboot and still not wifi

 g. sudo depmod
  sudo modprobe wl

  still no wifi

I am sorry that I can not provide more info as this is not my area of
expertise, but I do follow
instructions. I think. :-)

FYI

Paul,

Go ahead and close the bug report.  It was some time
ago and have switched to Xubuntu and have not seen
a problem.

I know that there are number of things keeping the team
busy and this is not that important.  IMHO.

Thanks for your support,

chuck

[Bug 683554] [NEW] Brasero disc burn error when checksum done

2010-12-01 Thread chuck adams
Public bug reported:

Using either of these two devices:

Samsung TSST Corp CDDVDW SH-S223L
or
lightscribe model DH-16A1L

with ubuntu 10.10 with all updates results in bad CD being
created with data files.

Did a

sudo chmod +x /usr/bin/wodim

and first disc was OK, but all after that are defective. I am willing
to run other tests, if necessary, to determine nature of problem.
Surely I'm not the only one having problems. Also, since whodim is
installed with regular install, should not cdrkiti-doc be installed for
info command?

Thanks in advance,

chuck

Installed 11.10 from scratch and updated with the
171 patches.

Using LG CD/DVD writer. System does not recognize
blank CD, but does come up with window to select
program for blank DVD.

Took and downloaded 11.10 ISO. Insert blank DVD.
Prompt and select Brasero. Writes and fixes, but
DVD drive activity is on solid during the check
phase. Select cancel and system quits and shows
that disc was successful.

Will try another system tomorrow, but it still
looks broken, but will have to find a CD/DVD
writer that is not LG and see if I can get
a CD to be recognized and recreate the previous
failure.

[Bug 746256] [NEW] daily-live 3/30/11 build install from CD problem

2011-03-31 Thread chuck adams
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

display is LB FLATRON E2040T LED 20" monitor. upon bootup from CD, and getting
the centered window
to chose between live or installation, the upper menu bar is viewable by only a
few pixels. can not select
wifi icon to connect to network so that a user can update and install 3rd party
software.

if I quit the menu then the live CD image screen does show the window and menu
and task bars correctly.
I hope this helps. I will be downloading and installing from scratch every day
that there is a new image.
