did the sudo apt-get install for gcc, libc6, libc6-dev, g++, gfortran, alsa-oss, liblame-dev, libvorbis-dev and check of execution of ./configure will see if that is everything ./configure make sudo make install this new version of sox winds up in /usr/local/bin/ This causes a problem conflict with the old version.
