A friendlier time-out notification might avoid confusion on this. I
have no issue with the daemon disappearing when a requesting application
is unreasonably idle, but barring a modification to the aptd
queueing/monitoring system, there should be some better form of

this issue". Are you also getting intermittent password rejection,
despite the fact that privs seem to get elevated after after the initial
password entry? I have a feeling this may be related to the general
aptd issues that
@TIm: I have had the same issue with all recent (last four?) Ubuntu
releases on my older PNY 6800GT. If you boot and wait, you will notice
that the X display seems to re-initialize itself at regular intervals
(every 2-3 minutes iirc). You can try and switch to a VT as the display
tries to re-init

WRT my post #6... after more testing on unpatched installations I cannot
reproduce this on my metacity text box, but can do so consistently on my
compiz test box. It seems that the general consensus pointing to compiz
is correct. Will patch and see what happens.

appears to be consistently reproducible on my test box (real hardware)
if these are any pre-existing partitions on the target drive. When I

In related news... the hostap upstream driver maintainers seem to have
corrected the initialization issue for PCI devices in Linux 2.6.35 tree.
Recent Ubuntu Maverick kernel updates contain this fix and my PCI prism
based card is now working properly on Maverick.
