@TIm: I have had the same issue with all recent (last four?) Ubuntu releases on my older PNY 6800GT. If you boot and wait, you will notice that the X display seems to re-initialize itself at regular intervals (every 2-3 minutes iirc). You can try and switch to a VT as the display tries to re-init (hit ctrl-alt-f1 mercilessly). This has worked for me in the past. These days I usually just bypass X on first boot and make a suitable 'vesa' xorg.conf by hand, then install the evil nvidia binaries after X gets going. Glad to see someone poking at this issue while we wait for stable 3D nouveau support in Ubuntu.
