I'm sorry, I got it all wrong. I've uninstalled the 2.6.38-9 package
which is the one we want instead of the 2.6.39. I have just reinstalled

OK! We have done a lot of progress!...ButI am sorry to say

I'm afraid there is no 2.6.38-9 kernel visible on GRUB. Only the
2.6.38-8 and the recovery mode which they appear once I select the
Previous linux versions option when the GRUB is loaded.

Please note that, unlike what yous said, I don't have to press and hold
the Shift key when the BIOS screen is visible in order to load GRUB.It

I just typed [sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=a1] (where a1 is a brightness value,
for example if you type F4.B=80 you get a medium brightness, if you type
F4.B=01 you get a very satisfying result--this is what I typed) Everything is
fine now although I can't seem to be able to adjust my brightness
