This is correct behaviour for a modal dialog, which is also arguably not
"detached". A detached dialog would be a non-modal dialog. Only non-
modal dialogs can be treated as separate from their parent windows.

Thanks! I can see some recurring issues there with atomic KMS reported
by both the kernel and the compositor. So I don't know if it's software
to blame or even a hardware problem (docks are often the problem so try
testing without a dock).

Oh I see. The hardware is switching between the same key meaning
KEY_PREVIOUSSONG or KEY_F4. So I think when the bug occurs it must be
after KEY_F4 went down and never came up before the hardware switched to
KEY_PREVIOUSSONG mode. Or the hardware switched Fn-lock so even if the
F4 key was released,
Recovery mode will cause some drivers to not be loaded. So that might
explain the lack of brightness control.
Please try booting normally, expecting it to fail. Then reboot again
into recovery and run:

(the login screen) has started before the amdgpu kernel driver was
loaded. And when the amdgpu driver appears one second later, gnome-shell
thinks the GPU has been swapped. The compositor (Mutter) clearly does

Also having separate device nodes is more to do with the fact that some
graphics cards are not GPUs. So they have no render nodes.

Stealing GPU resources is easier to hide though. If you don't notice the
noise or heat, then it's completely invisible to `top` and the rest of
the non-GPU consuming system.

consume GPU time.
Being a non-interactive user can include compromised daemons for
example.

Thanks. Yes it looks like things are freezing but I can't tell why.
Please try removing all custom extensions:
cd ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/
rm -rf extensions
sudo apt remove gnome-shell-extensions
and then log in again. If that doesn't solve the issue then please check
/var/crash/ for cra

The status for Plucky and Noble is "Triaged" and so it may be fixed in
future.
The status for Questing is "Won't Fix" because it doesn't have any Xorg
session to be fixed(!). Actually that kind of means it should be
"Invalid" for Questing.
