Having investigated and experimented further, I've been able to solve this
problem. I've requested a new certificate for an alternate email address
from StartSSL and saved it to and exported it from firefox (iceweasel).

I don't know which device it is either, but you can probably find it by
using 'strace' to find out what system calls are made ('strace -f -o
outputfile gthumb' and then try to access the camera, look for "open"
calls in outputfile).
