Monika, thanks for all this information ; in my case though I am also suffering frome the same black screen dead end at boot time there is something completely different : - the black screen appears each other few boots ; for example I may have 4 to 5 sessions with normal boot session then a failure. - moreover in case of normal boot in some cases when I run fgl_glxgears it is a prerfect rendering but most of the time I have a slight freezing effect !
I wish I could install Dapper version of fglx driver if possible to resume normal work but I do not know how to do that with an apt command. This bug is also related to the problem I have with GoogleEarth which gets stuck on splash screen when executed but fortunately here I keep control of my session.
