@ericw: As I wrote, I only disabled dri and glx in xorg.conf, didn't change the driver to vesa. Worked.
Two more Nvidia users with the black screen problem showed up on the ubuntuusers.de forum, for them changing the driver to vesa made booting the Live-CD possible. I'll have to check out the BIOS setting you suggest (AGP 4x) later. @Daniel Moyne: I am not sure what your problem installing the fglrx driver is? I installed it on Edgy from the repository, that was no problem. As 3D acceleration didn't work for some reason, I uninstalled it and then followed the steps for manual installation of the driver from the ATI site: http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Edgy_Installation_Guide#Method_2:_Generating.2FInstalling_Ubuntu_packages_for_the_new_8.31.5_drivers_in_Ubuntu_Edgy_Manually -- [edgy][regression][rv280] black screen and console freeze when X starts - drm lockup https://launchpad.net/bugs/67487 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
