I Also have this problem I have a Sempron 64 3400 running on an MSI k8T Neo v1 with ATI Radeon 9700 pro.
I've also experinced the same thing with live CD's for both PCLinuxOS and DreamLinux in both cases using the vesa driver overcomes the problem and once installed to hard disk the distro seems fine. With edgy however the safe grpahics mode (forcevesa) does not work.
