@ericw: I tried the two things you suggested and they both worked!

- I set the BIOS AGP speed from 8x to 4x. I can then boot the Live-CD
without any "tricks" ... I did not need safe graphics mode nor any boot
parameters, no editing of xorg.conf, either.

(For Daniel Moyne: In my BIOS it's under "Advanced" - "Chip settings"
... check out yours, you'll probably find the setting.)

- I set the AGP speed back to 8x for testing. I then only commented out
the module "dri", not "glx". That was sufficient, as ericw suggested.
