Everything I have configured in my /etc/network/interfaces worked for some
reason up to and including Ubuntu 8.10.
I had a look into ifupdown-udev integration in Ubuntu 8.10 and so far did not
notice any serious difference with 9.04, but anyway, with 9.04, actions
configured in 'interfaces' star
Oh yes, the direction "remove Compiz" worked for me. I removed
everything saying 'compiz' in the package name or description, and the
itch had gone ! Now I can start and stop googleearth as often as I want,
without being afraid of X hang.

They share some common hardware and configuration features, in part :
Pentium4 CPU with Hyperthreading turned on
(so that 2 logical cores are visible); 1 or 2 GB RAM;

(spending about 1 hour for 200 GB, 1.5 hours for 320 GB, and 2.5h for 500GB)

Right today (April 05th 2010) I had the same behaviour. On physical,

How to reproduce it :
1. Install Ubuntu 9.10 at its initial version (this creates /proc/bus/usb line

The reproduction is as usual : boot from Live CD and do some read-write
activity on a disk connected to Promise IDE controller.

The keys marked for brightness control on the keyboard are supposed to be Fn+F5
(down) and Fn+F6 (up).
But pressing them does not have any effects.
Volume control keys Fn+F1 (off), Fn+F2 (down), Fn+F3 (up) all do work, and KDE
shows appropriate indicators when they are press
