Subject: which server for Linux
Hello,
I have to set up an information system, which will be
If I remember, this has to do with a setting on the server side ( NT
running Citrix ).
I don't excatly recall the solution, but they basically had to "fix" or
re-install the
server side. May have to do with the way NT/Citrix does things with your
profile

That's a good Y3K trick ! Here in the US, 03/01/2000 would be March 1, 2000
( Let's see, we're still
in January on Earth I think) ! Well, I guess 03/01/2000 makes more sense
than 01/03/2000
( as does the Metric system - e.g. 1km=1000 m vs. 1mile=1876 yds or
whatever). It would be even better for
oh yes I did understand : > .
The problems I was referring to is as follows (I have run into this many
times):
- Win 95 client gets IP address from NT dhcp server.
- NT server assigns IP address to another machine ( for one reason or
another, maybe client problem, or server)
- win 95 mach
BTW, the NT dhcp server is compliant with M$ ( what else ) clients. There
are options
on the NT dhcp server which allow it to be compatible with "other" clients
(like Linux maybe ?)
The dhcp server will in fact mark IP addresses as BAD, and will not issue
that address if it is already being use
the dhcp server will check assigned IP's over the network based on the
global period assigned on the server
( e.g. 3 days). If the IP ( client ) is still there, it will renew the
lease ( for another 3 days, etc.). If the client
IP is not connected, it will mark that IP address as available, and
The disadvantage ( of win9x client saving the dhcp supplied IP ) is when
there is trouble on the dhcp server
( I have seen this on NT server) or network, that you have to somehow clear
the IP address from the win9x client
so it can get a new IP, but because it tries to renew the same address (

www.cnet.com will give you more deails. Seems as though this applies more
to newbies trying to run Linux as a

Windoze, but servers would be another matter
( especially for experienced / UNIX users).

this is history by now. RH 6.1 does have problems with this card ( we're
not talking about rh 5.2).
After turning off pnp on the NIC, the only way I could get it to work is
re-install rh 6.1.

not sure, but with 3c509b, had to turn off PNP on the NIC using 3c5x9cfg,
then re-install rh 6.1. maybe that helps.

OK, here's how I finally solved the problem :
1) Get 3c5X9CFG.exe from www.3com.com ( search under NIC, then it's on disk
#2 for 3c509 ).
2) boot to DOS, run the above config program, turn off Plug-N-PRAY ( PNP )
for the NIC
( note that this is different than turning of the PNP thru your BIOS,

I turned off pnp thru the PC's startup Config, then manually set it to IRQ
10 ( it was 15 in PNP mode),
then set it up as eth0 w/ IRQ 10 in Linux, but it still fails to
initialize. Any other suggestions ? I thought I read somewhere
that Linux does not support 3c509b specifically ?

There are no entries for eth0 in the /proc/interrupts. It appears that
Linux somehow detects it,
but fails to initialize it. I can't use IRQ 9 since it is used by the PCI,
and IRQ10 or 15 don't work ( wether pnp or not).
Any ideas ?

OK, I've had nothing but trouble with monitors in RH 5.2. Now , with RH

It's on an IBM P133, S3 video ( trio 64v+ - at least according to Win 95

Not sure about RH 6.0, but after turning off PNP on the 3c509b, I

the install found the NIC, or if I had to add it afterwards, but RH 6.1
definitely has problems with this card.
