Red Hat Named One of the Top 20 'Best Regarded'
Technology Companies, Top 10 for 'Vision and Leadership' in New
Survey BusinessWire, Tuesday, November 23,1999 at 12:39

       RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 23, 1999--
Harris Interactive, Inc. and Reputation Institute
"Digital 40" Survey Places Red Hat High Among Industry
Leaders in Measurement of 20 Key Attributes
Red Hat(R), Inc. (NASDAQ:RHAT), the leading
developer and provider of open source software
solutions, has been named to three prestigious lists
in a new Harris Interactive, Inc./Reputation
Institute survey. The two-phase national study
measured the reputation of technology companies by
examining how key stakeholders perceive companies on
20 attributes classified into six core
dimensions. The survey placed Red Hat, Inc. in the
Top 20 "best regarded" companies and in the Top
10 companies demonstrating "vision and leadership."
Red Hat's high standing in the survey results
is remarkable given the relatively small size of the
company compared to the survey's other leaders. Red
Hat finished just behind IBM and Motorola and
slightly ahead of Yahoo! and 3COM.
"This is a tremendous ratification of the
strength of our brand. We're delighted with the
results of this survey because it confirms our view that
open source software and our business model are held
in high regard by the public," said Matthew Szulik,
president and CEO of Red Hat, Inc. "For our
relatively young company to be placed so highly
among established, long-time industry leaders is
compelling proof that open source is gaining momentum."
"It's remarkable for a company that was
relatively unknown just a year ago to place so highly in
a survey that measures attributes like vision,
leadership and public regard," said Joy Sever, Senior
Vice President at Harris Interactive, Inc. "In a
short time Red Hat has built a strong reputation as a
leader in the technology industry and it is
certainly well-regarded by those who are familiar withthe
  company."
       Open Source Momentum
International Data Corp. (IDC) research states
that Linux was the fastest-growing server
operating environment in 1998, growing more than 190
percent in that year alone and capturing more
than 15.8 percent of the 4.4 million revenue
shipment server operating systems market segment.
Additionally, IDC states that Red Hat Linux is by
far the most popular distribution, preferred by 68.7
  percent of U.S. Linux users.
Red Hat's numerous alliances with industry
leaders and the demand for Linux-based
applications has created open source support from
many of the industry's leading software and
  hardware manufacturers, including Compaq(R),
Computer Associates, Corel, Dell, Gateway,
  Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Intel, Netscape, Novell,
Oracle(R) and SAP(R).
