I had a corrupt .desktop file in /usr/share/applications, removing it
and running update-desktop-database fixed the problem and I was able

That's not sufficient.
You should also apt-get dist-upgrade. Use with caution though, check what it
tries to remove

I just started using Debian not too long ago. When I did the install I think
it installed gnome by default, I don't remember.
I run KDE only, yet I have had problems with gnome screensaver taking over,
and other issues. Right now, for instance I did a ps looking for gnome apps,
and got this:

I have wanted to set up apache and subversion first.
You have said that I can run trac in standalone I presume that I need to
run svnserve before ?
And, when using subversion in this way I will not be able to grab the
project via https, isn't it ?

When I try to connect to subversion through https I get a 403 from
nowhere. And this in apache2/error.log :
