[Bug 355318] Re: Open dialog populates slowly

2009-06-23 Thread Coz
Hey guys,
i can confirm this slow open dialog problem. In terminal i get this when
running gimp and trying to open a file from the File/Open menu;

(gimp:4196): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_tree_sortable_set_sort_column_id:
assertion `GTK_IS_TREE_SORTABLE (sortable)' failed

I have to say that I have both kde and gnome installed and it is slow in both.
No matter which application I try to open a file location ..it has taken up to
one minute to populate the open dialog

sounds like januty near the release :)

[Bug 368867] [NEW] /usr/bin/X :0 -br -audit 0 -auth /var/lib/gdm/:0.Xauth -nolisten tcp vt7

2009-04-28 Thread Coz
Public bug reported:

Hey guys,
Only on ubuntu 9.04 has this been happening.
/usr/bin/X :0 -br -audit 0 -auth /var/lib/gdm/:0.Xauth -nolisten tcp vt7 is
constantly shooting up cpu usage from 0 -75% just by moveing windows.. This
happen regardless if compiz is running or not.
This is a clean install of 9.04 however it has been happening since beta.
I cant find any other info on this but if there is anything I can do to get
more info please let me know.
To make this clear,,, the system begins to bog down.. windows move with jerky
unsmooth behavior... cube is very jerky using nvidia 180.44.
It is constant and and takes very little for this /usr/bin/X :0 -br -audit
0 -auth /var/lib/gdm/:0.Xauth -nolisten tcp vt7 to shoot up cpu usage.
Even with metacity instead of compiz it shoots up.
It is increasingly difficult to work when the windows are difficult to move
around.

I had the same issue here with my adaptec 39160 controller, and ubuntu

new releases, however its interesting that it rarely occurred during the
pre-release periods!

[Bug 236483] [NEW] Language Translation on hardy not working??

2008-06-01 Thread Coz
Public bug reported:

Hey guys,
I had read a few bug reports on on language translators not working on hardy
so I installed three different ones to test gnom-translate, youtranslate, and
another one.
None of them work.
I dont often use a translator but I know that they are not working on ubuntu
hardy.
If I put in the word "go" it spits out "go" again.
If I put in "bonjout" in french to english it spits out "bonjour" again.
Not sure of the issue just wanted to let you know.

[Bug 231677] [NEW] wayv doesnt work again

2008-05-18 Thread Coz
Public bug reported:

Hey guys,
Well this is going to be the last time I report this since nothing
constructive has been done since Ubuntu Edgy release.
Wayv, systemic gesture recognition, does not work in ubuntu after release . It
refuses to work in a user account but if you create a root account and log into
that , wayv works flawlessly.
Wayv will only work in the user account prior to release, there are not
terminal read outs and no errors of anykind.
Yet, it is as if it is "blocked" from being used, and as I mentioned , in a
root account there are not problems at all.
I know this is an older application , however, it does work pretty flawlessly
on ubuntu even with compiz fusion running, but only in a root account.
I bring this up "again" because I have two clients that cannot run their system
without this application. I realize that the number 2 is not enough to get
worked up about however, this application is also an accessibilty application.
So, there it is again for about the fifth time. I can say that after one of the
other reports , I believe for fesity, one of the developers said that it had
been fixed...but he was wrong.
so if there is NO possible way to get this application to run in a user account
and not just in an actual root account let me know! I am certainly as tired of
typing this as you are of reading it. Although I would appreicate an
explanation of why it runs in a root account and not the user account.

[Bug 355318] [NEW] Open dialog populates slowly

2009-04-04 Thread Coz
Public bug reported:

Hey guys,
I have noticed on ubuntu 9.04 a similar problem that was on ubuntu 8.10.
If I , for example, oen Firefox,, then File menu Open/Open File the open
dialog takes way too long to populate, however if I open Firefox with sudo and
perform the same action the open dialog is populated as soon as it opens.
this is not related to themes, howver, I have tried all the themes on the
system.
 Under root it works fine.
Under user it is slow.
I have no terminal readouts
Attached is a screenshot of the open dialog just after going to Firefox
File/Open File.. and you can see that I had time to take the screenshot before
it populated.

hey bryce,
sorry for the delay in keeping up with this bug.
It had been fixed a while back but now has returned and the nvidia driver you
had posted did not allow me to reboot with that dirver installed.
The same thing is occurring but at a less intensive rate cpu usage at
stand still is between 7 and 10% which in itself is unusual at least on this
system... I did have karmic installed and did not test to see if it was also
occurring there.

[Bug 67720] Cannot install wireless driver in newer edgy version

2006-10-23 Thread Coz
Public bug reported:

I had installed, initially, edgy knot 1.
The wireless drivers installed fine and I have benn able to update that
particular install on one of my systems.
I installed the edgy rc and the wireless drivers will not install saying
something to the effect,, /lib/modules/linux generic/***, some folder does not
exist.
It would not make the drive.
now I aplogize for not writing down the exact error message. I have been
trying to get this installed.
I also tried downloading the knot1 or 2 and they are not avaiable.
I woujld appreciate you guys fixing the problem. If I try to install again i
will certainly write down the exact error, but it is in the /lib/modles/
linux---generic/---.
Apologize again more the lack of specifics, I need these drivers installed
inorder to run the dam system. I have one , as mentioned that runs fine but
that was edgy knot1.

[Bug 210332] Re: Ubuntu Hardy beta gcursor

2008-04-28 Thread Coz
Hey guys,
well as interesting as the "how to report bugs" is as reading m atter there
are times that an application just doesnt work and very little readout from the
terminal is avaiable.
however, gcursor does not work in hardy and this is all of the readout from
the terminal...

(gcursor:28411): libglade-WARNING **: could not find signal handler
'extract_theme'.

(gcursor:28411): libglade-WARNING **: could not find signal handler
'open_theme_dir'.

(gcursor:28411): libglade-WARNING **: could not find signal handler
'entry_selected'.

(gcursor:28411): libglade-WARNING **: could not find signal handler
'size_changed'.

This has been consistent from alpha series till to day April 29,2008.

I have a clean install of hardy and nothing has changed for several things
...gcursor is one of them... i wo uld suggest that if this is working on your
systems then you must have done something different than every other user got
get it to work.

[Bug 188787] Re: no wacom tablet driver (no autoprobe, patch available)

2008-04-28 Thread Coz
Hey guys,
Well I did the Vincenzo patch and, with nvidia, Igor is correct it did not
maintain the nvidia settings in xorg and they had to be copied and pasted in .
however, as nicely as this works, it is not enough !!
This is unacceptable for handicapped individuals who require a wacom tablet to
function on a computer.
This is having someone jump through hoops which is the opposite of offering
accessibility features!!!
excuse me if I sound a bit irritated, however this lighting speed every six
month approach to ubuntu , at least in this case, is out of hand. I think
anyone who uses or "requires" wacom tablets would have been more than willing
to wait until auto detection was fixed. This patch is nice and it works with
some adjustments using nvidia, however i would never expect any of my
handicapped clients finding their way with this patch, which from their point
of view, would require them to pay me to fix the issue.
I dont know who creates the "agenda" list for the next version of ubuntu,
however when it comes to things that have already been implimented, ie wacom
tabelts autodetection, and it is not working on the new version of ubuntu,
then that particular issue should be high on the list of fixes, otherwise there
is no need for a new version if it steps backwards.
I apologize if i sound "picky" or aggressive here, but I do have handicapped
clients and I do tend to get very agressive when i see something like this
occur. In my opinion , this is mind boggling. Accessibility features must not
be seen as secondary issues to the working of the OS, it must be at the top of
the list of requirements for the system to be realesed.
I think it's irrelevant that it would push the release date to 8 months
instead of 6.

Re: [Bug 188787] Re: no wacom tablet driver

2008-04-13 Thread Coz
Hey guys,
i was under the impression, reading at linux wacom project that xcb is the
reason there is no wacom tablet driver in hardy and only a patch exists that
apparenlty doesnt always work.
Unless Linus wacom project has updated the driver i dont think there is a
way to have wacom on hardy which for me persoanlly would mean going back to
Feisty.
Unless you guys at ubuntu are planning some work around, we will have to
wait for an xcb compliant driver from Linus wacom project.
Correct me if I am wrong about this!!!

Re: [Bug 188787] Re: no wacom tablet driver (no autoprobe, patch available)

2008-04-14 Thread Coz
Hey Justin,
well wacom tools is installed but that does nothing if the driver isnt
there unless you are saying that wacom tools is the driver??? Which would
completely surprise me!
Look..if I have to drag out a feisty or gutsy xorg to run this then its
useless.. There is no reason anyone should have to do this. considering the
blazing speed at which ubuntu improves it seems like a huge step backwards
for wacom NOT to be autodetected and the settings in xorg set by default.
No , my tablet does not work with wacom tools and even though I put in the
xorg settings for wacom still nothing .
In hardy cat event6 is for wacom and even that , along with the settings in
xorg do nothing.
Auto detection is imperative... the drivers need to be installed by default.

I have argued this way back when wacom was not installed or autodetected. If
someone decides to use ubuntu in a graphics house no wacom is a real mark
against its use or if someone who is handicapped has to jump through hoops
to get this running then again it is useless.
No, my tablet, an intuos III, is not running, wacom tools installed and all.
so my suggestion is to get autodetection back up and running
there are no alternatives to this!!
without it ubuntu cannot brag about accessibility features
Now... if you feel I am missing something, which is certainly possible, let
me know :)
By the way I am not angry or anything just very determined not to allow
something like this to get passed by by developers. Autodetection is
absolutely necessary.. and no way is it a proper action to have to borrow
something from another version's xorg to get this up and running.

[Bug 189867] [NEW] enabling fastwrites and SBA

Now nothing happens at all.
When I restart after adding that line and then cat

[Bug 188932] [NEW] creating root account no metacity

2008-02-04 Thread Coz
Public bug reported:

Hey guys,
I generally create a root account that I use on rare occasions, however in
hardy, when I log into a root account metacity does not start. I have to open
terminal and metacity --replace to function in a root account.
Also the run dialog does not work in a root account.
This is a clean install of Hardy alpha4.

No errors are reported nor do they show up in terminal

[Bug 180955] upgraded to hardy layla24 alsa driver no login sounds

2008-01-06 Thread Coz
Public bug reported:

Hey guys,
I upgraded to hardy to test it.. it recognized the alsa drivers for my pro
layla24 sound card however no system sounds were able to play.. i assumed this
had to do with pulseaudio... disabled pulseaudio service from loading still no
sound.
All sounds play through xmms mplayer etc. just not system sounds.
i am not sure if it is due to this driver having been installed, but thought I
should mention it in case it is relevant to the problem
I get no errors of any kind the system sounds simply do not play at all.

[Bug 181286] Still wayv will not work in usr account

2008-01-08 Thread Coz
Public bug reported:

Hello guys,
Well the same problem still exists even though i was contacted once saying
this was fixed.
Wayv, systemic gesture recognition application, does NOT work on ubuntu in the
user account.
If an root account is created there is not problem at all even with compiz
fusion running , however it refuses to intiate in the user account. There are
no errors.
I have been reporting this for over a year now, and the last contact I had
said , as I mentioned, that this was fixed and it most definitly is not fixed.
The developer expressly told me that there should be no problem with this and
it is puzzling that it ONLY works as root in a root account. It also doesn't
work by starting wayv as root in a user acoount .

Please see what the problem is... it was not solved when I was told it was

[Bug 108545] feisty release default values nivida reinstall every reboot

2007-04-21 Thread Coz
Public bug reported:

OK, April 21, 2007
Fresh install of Feisty with all default values including sources list
install nvidia drivers, everytime reboot the nvidia drivers needs to be
reinstalled.
i was under the impression that this was fixed Before the final release.
What is the hold up?
Is there a fix for this?
 Another kernel?
it is most definately a serious flaw unless code was put in that rejects nvidia
driver because it is not supported?
A fix, rather a solution, would be appreciated

[Bug 104804] gtkglextmm-1.2.0 is missing in feisty

2007-04-09 Thread Coz
Public bug reported:

hello,
last week had fesity installed. Decided to try other distrobutions so this
week, actually a few days ago, I installed feisty again.
I generally install the same applications on my system that i use frequently,
one of them is sharpcontruct. This worked well last week on feisty having only
to install one extra library,, however this install in addition to that extra
library, it is now requesting gtkglexrmm. That library is no longer aviablle
and is not in the repositories.
I have other aplications that depend on that library and I cannot use them now.
I am hoping this is just an oversight.
having tried to compile the source doesn't seem to work either.
Again, this is conusing. since it was available last week in feisty and now is
not

[Bug 47956] Re: wayv will work logged in as root but not in the user account

2007-04-02 Thread Coz
Well I tried wayv on fresh install of feisty, it worked! Even after an
installation of beryl it worked fine, however, after adding a few applications,
not sure which caused the break, wayv no longer works in the user account ,
only the root acoount.
i f you can explain what it was that was the problem in the first place I
may be able to hunt the culprit for the breakage.
i would appricaiate any information as to the cause of the original problem
and its solution.
 Thanks
again

[Bug 97204] official nvidia driver from their site cannot be used in feisty beta?

2007-03-27 Thread Coz
Public bug reported:

hello,
installed Feisty beta, did all updates, build-essential.
Downloaded the recent 9755 nvidia driver from their site.
All went well.
Booted into feisty -- no problems
System/Preferences/Desktop effects-- and this is the message I received;
"Your /etc/X11/xorg.con has been manually changed. Sorry,
restricted-manager cannot be used with customized configurations
Call "sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg" to switch back
to automatic configuration handling."
I prefer ONLY to install the driver that I download from NVIDIA's site.
I never use nvidia-glx, ever, so this is apparently a serious bug.
Now I am going to enable the wacom driver and if i get the same or similar
message
i will reprot that as well.

[Bug 77572] wayv will not run since Dapper Final

2007-01-03 Thread Coz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: wayv

I have been using wayv since Breezy and all through dapper until Dapper was
released as final.
More importantly, I also have several clients who need "wayv" because fo their
handicap.
However, wayv has not worked on Ubuntu since dapper was finalized and has
continued not to work through edgy and apparently feisty at this point.
There is little info I can offer as far as errors in the terminal since it
shows none!
There is a catch to this however.
The catch is that if you create a root account on ubuntu, and log into that
account, wayv works flawlessy, but will NOT run in the user account even if
started as root.
There is most definitely something strange about the user account,
specifically and only in ubuntu, for this not to work.
I have had others try wayv on their edgy and feistly installations with the
same results but one, who has tweaked and changed the default install of edgy.
It works on his system but he doesn't remember exactly what he did to edgy that
would have an impact on the user account that would allow wayv to function
normally!
Wayv is part of the default install of Debian, according to the developer,
and he also informs that it works fine on other distributions, ie RedHat, Suse,
etc.
At this point, it appears that the development team, at some point with the
Dapper Final, have done something to the user account in Ubuntu that prevents
this needed application to funtion properly!
Again, in a root account, wayv runs flawlessly...but in user account it will
not.
Also there is no problem with permissions or ownership of wayv. i have given
full ownership to the user and still nothing. All permissions to user, and
still nothing.

[Bug 81211] popularity-contest

2007-01-23 Thread Coz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: popularity-contest

Fortunlately popularity-contest is not that reliable.
There is no need for developers to know what apps are popular with users.
If there is a need, then create a web page for voting, put counters on the
repos!
You either are unaware or refuse to see the relation between
popularity-contest and Microsoft having a piece of spyware on XP that did the
same thing. They got complaints and removed it, no doubt renamed and redirected.
Popularity-contest cannot be removed without uninstalling ubuntu-common.
it is installed by default, and I only found it because it was being updated.
I then read much of what popularity-contest was considered for and NO it
should be removed.
Although popularity-contest is apparently a user enabled 'thing", it is still
potentially spyware if for no other reasons that it is installed by default and
cannot be removed without removal of other things.
If in fact developers needed to know what apps users found and used as the
most important, then, as small as this may seem, gnome-screensaver would never
have been installed in place of xscreensaver and the replies from developers
would not have been " Too bad! We voted on gnome-screensaver and it stays"
By the above fact, concerning gnome-screensaver.. the explanations of
popularity-contest are invalid.
This needs to be removed from ANY default install of ubuntu, and user's choice
to install or not.
Developers and users are EQUAL in the continuation of this distrobution.
Without the users, developers have nothing to do, and without the developers
the users have nothing to use.
Popularity-contest is not only a potentially dangerous addition to ubuntu but
the name implies that it was coined to try to hide it potentials and
similarities to spyware.

[Bug 81211] Re: popularity-contest

2007-01-24 Thread Coz
hello,
 Thanks for the response
No this doesn't address my concerns.
My concerns are that it is installed in the first place by default instead of
user install.
As I mentioned, there is no real need for any developer to know what
applications are being used or most popular.
If that were a true concern then gnome-screensave, for example, would never
have been used in the default install for ubuntu-gnome.
My concern is again that it is installed by default, there is not need for
it, on top of which is not reliable at this point anyway.
But thanks for reading this.

[Bug 572532] [NEW] gnome-appearance-properties

2010-04-30 Thread Coz
Public bug reported:

Hello,
Although many of the developers will not see this as a bug...it is in fact a
bug .!!.
When using lucid / dual monitor / nvidia the wallpaper rendering options
are not correct... you can span a wallpaper or stretch a wallpaper but not
both... Every option for wallpaper rendering under gnome-appearance-properties
does only one thing effectively and that is mirror the image on both
monitors!!!
If I span the wallpaper it centers between both monitors...if I "stretch" the
wallpaper it mirrors on both monitors.

This forces individuals to create wallpaper that has two images blended into
one.
this is ludicrous... I have been using ubuntu from the day onewhoever
decided on this did not make the correct choices.
"Span" should span any image across both monitors which will also stretch it
unless the image is already set at the correct resolution...however I have
images at the correct resolution and still "span" centers that image between
the two monitors.
Please out of common sense... change this back or correctly make span do
exactly that
thanks

[Bug 532641] Re: window controls don't scale up

2010-04-12 Thread Coz
Hello all,
i would like to comment on the themes and the issues that have been mentioned
here.
I have been with ubuntu from the beginning. other distributions before that.
One thing has been consistent through the years... theme creators rarely ,,
if ever... consider accessibility when creating a theme when in fact this
should be the first consideration after deciding on general appearances , ie
colours etc!
Since the advent of Bery/compiz /3D desktops... accessibility features are
incorporated into compiz plugins.. as far as themes are concerned...this is
where the now nearly extinct Emerald was far superior to any gtk2 theme or qt
theme.
Emerald had options for just about every option one needs to change for
appearance and eve accessibility.
At the point Ubuntu is now... any "default" theme that is going to be
presented to the users MUST have options to adjust for all reasonable
situations and conditionsThis includes options to set buttons on the left
or right for right or left handed people..resizing of buttons and text and
window borders.. as well as colour adjustments..etc .etc... anything less is
not up to modern system requirements for accessibility or general theming
capabilities. I, and my guess most others , are not going to put up with " what
you see is what you get" Apple/ Microsoft approach to ...at least...themes. <<
reference to buttons on the left !!!
Changing the look of a theme along with it's colours is NOT enough!
If you need to have several sets of buttons so that you can resize the buttons
for those that need it ,,then make the extra sets of buttons and have a tick
box to choose sizes...
what surprises me , at this late stage,, is no one is creating a gtk2 theme
maker... as difficult as that may be,,
OPTIONS...in the system and certainly in the themes are absolutely required
to the multitude needs and work situations "especially" accessibility!!!
The developers involved in the creation of Ubuntu are quite
brilliantbut with all due respect to them and our benevolent dictator...
when it comes to the look ...feel. i dont want a developer making ANy final
decisionsthese decisions must be sought out from those that are going to
use them first order of business"Does it have all of the accesssibility
features requred???"

[Bug 582177] [NEW] boot drops to busybox scsi drives

2010-05-18 Thread Coz
Public bug reported:

Hey guys,

Ubuntu Lucid 10.04
This has been a bug in ubuntu for several years now
after install..boot drops to busybox because of my scsi drives.
I have posted this in the past and seems the only solution suggested is adding
a rediculous rootdelay=40 to grub.
This has never occurred on any distribution I have used , installed on the same
system, in the paste 6 years...only ubuntu:)
is there..hopefully...another solution other than that darn long
rootdelay=40???
thanks
p.s I also asked on the #ubuntu-devel channel with no response.. probably
because it was perceived as a "support" question instead of a persistent bug .

[Bug 582624] [NEW] ubuntu lucid secure-delete incomplete?

2010-05-18 Thread Coz
Public bug reported:

hey guys,

Ubuntu Lucid 10.04
Secure-delete 3.1-5 0 in lucid
Secure delete has several smaller uitlities, one of which is "smem" a tool
for defragging memory cache.
however secure delete 3.1-5 0 does not have smem included in the package...when
typingsmem -ll -v after installing secure-delete the read out is that "
smem is not known sudo apt-get install smem... <<< that smem is a memory
reporting tool not a memory defrag utility.
Installing ubuntu karmic's secure delete 3.1-4 has smem included
Not sure if this is developer removed or ubuntu removed.

[Bug 591484] [NEW] no right click options for umount with multiple partitioned external drive

2010-06-08 Thread Coz
Public bug reported:

Hey guys,

Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 and ubuntu 10.10 maverick
External drive with multiple partitions..fat 32 or ntfs or ext4drive
icons on Desktop... highlight all drive icons...right click...no unmount option
or safely remove drive options..
Highlight single partition icon right click has "safely remove drive"
option, however when executing this it gives error pop up ;

Error detaching: helper exited with exit code 1: Detaching device /dev/sdc
USB device: /sys/devices/pci:00/:00:1d.7/usb1/1-6)
SYNCHRONIZE CACHE: FAILED: No such file or directory
(Continuing despite SYNCHRONIZE CACHE failure.)
STOP UNIT: FAILED: No such file or directory

This occurs on all hardware systems..3 here.. with either lucid or
maverick installed... ubuntu karmic has no issues at all with
unmounting any external with multiple partitions.

It was brought to my attention. that this may be a kernel issue

[Bug 586909] [NEW] wallpaper options dont work on dual monitors

2010-05-28 Thread Coz
Public bug reported:

Hey guys,

 Ubuntu Lucid 10.04
gnome-control-center

 Appearance preferences...Backgrounds...Style options , Tile,Zoom, Center,
Scale, Stretch, Span...
ALL options , except for Span only mirror the wallpaper on both monitors...SPan
does not span both monitors but simply place the scaled wallpaper in between
both monitors..ie..half of image on one monitor...half of image on other
monitor..

I would have expected Span to actually "stretch" the wallpaper across
both monitors but it does not.

[Bug 278176] Re: disk detection is real slow with some hardware (timout shell drops)

2010-05-29 Thread Coz
Hey guys,
Apparently,, this is an on going problem ONLY with ubuntu.
I had commented on this above back in 2008, I have tried almost every
distribution...not one of them have this issue with scsi drives and the adaptec
39160 controller.
This IS specific to Ubuntu and at this point...since I have been using ubuntu
almost exclusively,,,since it's initial release... a real pain in the butt! :)
I "do not" want to have a rootdelay=40 ...it is painful to wait nearly that
long.
This is a serious bug...and it needs to be addressed!
Why only ubuntu, particularly since ubuntu also has a server edition..which
many servers are still using scsi and more likely than not.. an adaptec scsi
controller card??
This has been reported now, on this bug report.. since 2008.. !
In 5 months the next ubuntu release will be out
I hope someone makes this a priority for the next release...I am not interested
in fancy plymouth splashes...or grub2 advances..etc.etc... fix this bug Please!
It has been around for too long
