If it's IDE, what position is it on your IDE chain? Chances are your CDROM never got linked from the IDE position (assuming it's IDE) to the /dev/cdrom. OR, your xplaycd doesn't know anything about it. I tried an alternate CD Player awhile back and found that the ONLY cd player that'll work for me is KSCD (under KDE.) Give that one a shot (assuming you're using KDE) and see if it works. BTW, you can't mount a music CD and you'll never see anything in /mnt/cdrom unless you have a data CD loaded AND mounted.
