yeah, i advocate small laptops and large external displays; there was a point where i was ready to buy a 17" replacement for my 15" laptop, but a great deal led me to a 13" instead ... turned my head around; when i'm home or at work i put it on a stand with an external keyboard and plug into a 24" display on a VESA arm
if i needed a computer i wasn't planning to carry around (and given my personal preference for Macs) i'd buy a 27" iMac for less than a 17" MacBook Pro -- fantastic (though glossy) IPS display panel, takes about the same desk space, and much more ergonomic than a laptop; runs Windows too -- though i guess in Windows dollars $1700 is too much for a mid-range desktop plus an excellent 27" display
