General comment on the laptop vs. desktop choice: been there, done that. For many years I used a 15" Macbook Pro as my only computer. Two-three years ago I got a desktop (iMac 20"). I needed a newer computer with more RAM and higher speed to handle Lightroom and I wanted the larger higher resolution screen. IMHO, if your laptop has a big enough screen to be of much value in evaluating/editing photos, then it has gotten too large to be of much value as a portable system. Last year I bought a new Mac laptop, 13", that I travel with. It is a minor nuisance to copy files back and forth, etc. but for me a small laptop plus reasonable desktop is a far more functional setup than operating with a single computer.
