A lot of the weight is probably down to the operating software being
written in COBOL, with lots of superfluous code. They should use a
lightweight language and operating system like Oberon. 

Also, pixels weigh the same (15.34 luctograms) whatever size they are,
so the more they force onto a same-size sensor, the heavier it all
gets.
