It may well be that my use of dual monitors created a problem but in any case the install went badly and I ended up needing to totally rebuild my system.
This is the second time that I have gone through similar problems with the Nvidia driver and I am now going to be content to simply use the i7 on my system which is providing reasonably swift processing for my taste.
