Unfortunately I've moved on in terms of the messaging software I use. I
am using Pidgin now and I have also stopped using jabber since the
server I was registered with was taken down. This means that I am not
really in a good position to test this anymore.

Turns out I'd forgotten to use the -n switch (echo -n 1 > ...). Still.
that doesn't explain why it worked the first time even without it. I
don't know if that is significant enough to warrant a bug report or not.
