The problem appears to be to do with the way X11 displays the fonts. I have found that I would see the incorrect spacing when I was working on a document in openoffice. I would also see it in a pdf file created from that document when it was displayed in gnome. However the same pdf document appeared without the spacing problem when displayed in Windows XP. It also printed correctly from that pdf document in windows.
Unfortunately I cannot test how it prints from linux because of lack of hardware.
