Since then, AMD released a X Server 1.5-compatible version of the fglrx
proprietary driver.
If you can cope with this driver being non free, it can be an alternative.
Besides I think the problem is only for R600+ cards (HD2/3/4xxx). I
tested the radeon driver on older 9700 and X1950 cards and it
I tested all 3 pairs of packages linked above (I didn't install the -dbg) but
none of these solution worked for me.
X started as before with no special error in the log, but then the LCD panel
complained about an "out of range" problem and went to sleep.

It's fixed for me in Jaunty.
The radeon driver works correctly again. So far, support is quite limited (no
3D, glxinfo/glxgears crashing) but it works. I'm using the default xorg as
generated by dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg.

This was most likely a bug in Grub triggered by desktop-base because it calls
update-grub during installation.
I’m closing it as it was raised against a much older Ubuntu version.

Looking at the following logs part :

This is fixed in Debian Stretch’s versions of desktop-base 9.0.x.
We stop shipping this file, so it won’t bother plasma-active-default-settings
anymore.

I can confirm this bug after upgrading from lucid to maverick.
Users with administrative rights used to be asked for their password when
shutting down the system and other users were logged in. This doesn't work
anymore.
Please note the following line in the .xsession-errors.old attached above:

Yes, this happens when there are non-ascii character in one of the apt
sources files.
…which must be very common because the disabled sources comment added by
the release upgrade process is localized !
For example in French, the following was added to all my
sources.list.d/*.list.distUpgrade dur
Hi, I have the same problem with my Asus R500V (K55VD).
The 20130305 daily live for raring doesn’t boot either.
There was no need to swich to legacy bios for me, just switching secure
boot on and off makes the live fail or boot.
