If you're on Lucid, just install the proprietary driver by installing fglrx.
If you're on Karmic just install the ATI proprietary driver from their website.
(search for fglrx driver on google).
See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI
Or you can just wait for the kernel >=2.6.35
This bug has been fixed in Lucid.

I can confirm this bug on latest Ubuntu Karmic 64 bits (kernel 2.6.31-20).
This is easily reproductible with sfill command (secure-delete package) :
sfill -fIllv /directory/ (which pretty much does the same thing as the script
above)
After a few minutes, the system crash (kernel panic).
Here ar
With the default ext4 mount options, there is no bug :
rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime (well nosuid and nodev are not by default actually)
It is not the nobarrier option as it was not working with it either.
So it must come from the writeback mode (with optional nobh) and/or the

Just tried to add mem=4G iommu=off" to kernel boot parameters.
Open /etc/default/grub and change the line :
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
by
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash mem=4G iommu=off"
And then in a terminal, type :
sudo update-grub
There should be no kernel panic anym
As a workaround you can either use KDM as default login manager or use

Using Palimpsest (from Karmic) has fixed this issue as you can
disconnect AND power down any usb devices with it with just one click ;)
(You can even access S.M.A.R.T attributes from your external usb hard
drives). Haven't try sdparm command though...

Well, what if I want to use my modem ? It was working on Jaunty, so this is a
regression...and the above fix is just a workaround...
I know this is a proprietary driver, so we can't blame ubuntu dev...Anyway,
analog modems are less and less used so it's not a serious regression...
