I played aorund with this a bit, and at least in the case of xeyes it's
caused by a missing .desktop file:
I can get predictable, normal behavior by doing the following:
eric@host:~/Desktop$ cat < xeyes.desktop

- splash screens are proper resolution on both monitor and internal LCD

I can confirm that the monitor does work correctly in external-only mode
under oneiric.
However, cycling through the modes with Fn+F7 never results in the
desktop being stretched across monitors ??

I think I have the same problem with Evolution program's calendar.
After successfully using the calendar (in Evolution) for several month,
it has changed itself to read only.
