With an rpm, I can remove the installation by typing 'rpm -e ...', but I installed
clamav from source and want to remove it to install the rpm version. How is this done?

Pacakages and how to Apache Uninstall

So this means I have to execute the commands in following order:
# ./configure
# make
# checkinstall -R
# make install
The above steps would create RPM file. Also, this means that "make install"
would actually NOT install apache

There is no standard way to uninstall software installed via make. You have to
look at the makefile. There may be a make target the removes the software. If
not, you could do a 'make install' again and save the output to a file so you
can figure out what needs to be removed.

Your best bet is to track down the problem with RPM.
Even if you do manage to un-install it, without RPM, reinstalling it
without rpm will be tricky. I've never tried, but I doubt rpm will

You are missing part of the package names. The fastest way to get it all
is with the command:
rpm -q -a | grep samba | xargs rpm -e

How exactly do you know that it is installed?

via rpm or from a tarball?
If via rpm, perhaps you have samba-client and/or samba-common. Try working
with those and see if it works.
If from a tarbal, the best way is to configure and make it, then try 'make
uninstall' to get 'er gone. Not everything supports it, but many d
