Try to put this in your /etc/conf.modules file:
# let modprobe find the ppp modules
alias ppp-compress-21 bsd_comp
alias ppp-compress-24 ppp_deflate
alias ppp-compress-26 ppp_deflate
Hope this helps.

Not exactly what your asking, but why not bind "/sbin/ifup ppp0"
and "/sbin/ifdown ppp0" to keyboard shortcuts? That would seem to
be much easier...well that is the way I like it.

Hi Zaigui
I'm really not sure how to describe this in more detail, but I'll
try.
Start the program linuxconf. It can run in text mode, or with a
gui. Either way, navigate to
Config -> Networking -> Client Tasks -> PPP/SLIP/PLIP.
if you have an ppp0 entry, delete it.
then add one. try follow
I am trying very hard to figure out how to make my PPP working too. Can
you provide more details please?
My modem works. I was able to dial out to my university (using the
dial-up
number) and prompted for user id and password. After I logged in, I choose
from a list of services PPP. Then It gave
Believe it or not, this is probably the simplest PPP scenario. The easiest
way to this would be to go into linuxconf, delete your existing ppp0
inetrface, and start a new one from scratch. From there, it's pretty much
like setting up a dialup connection in windows. Just say you want to use

does the command dmesg or the file /var/log/messages show you anything. next
time it happens, see if you ping the mailserver you are trying to connect to.

Thanks for the fix. Yes, all i needed to do was to be online in add servers
to Netscape. Thanks also for the recommendations on mail programs. Windows
is still my primary OS, but this may be useful info later in my process of
migration over to Linux.

Hi Leston,
Without being able to guarantee it, I think your problem is that under
UNIX/Linux you have

I'm having this very same problem with Netscape. Initially it would let me
add a mail server, but now i can't change the server info AT ALL. ¡It's

Sometime ago I posted a question (many questions, in fact) about getting
ppp up and running. Several people, including Michael Jinks, gave advice.
I have been struggling to make sense of the various docs (including PPP
HOWTO, ppp tips, ISP Connectivity HOWTO, etc, etc) without success.
Today I de
Download the ppp-howto. Basically your carrier is starting the ppp
interface (garbled text) and what you need to do is start pppd to
accept this information. If you read the ppp-howto and don't get
it or want to try another way try downloading ezppp or xisp and
these will help you get online. I
