Have you overlooked a gateway address (as was mentioned a default router)?
(Bif its on the same segment it doesn't need a way out and so would explain
(Bwin2k and rh9 responding - which I am sure you already know :o).

Someone suggest adding sendmail:all to my hosts.allow file but that didn't

I recently setup a new Red Hat 9 server that hosted at a local Colocation
Provider. I have several times in the past used red hat, but till now never
played with Send Mail as I have always used my providers mail.
I decide that I would setup mail on this server. I've gone throught the
instuction

"failed-disk" with "raid-disk".
Make and verify a full backup before you do this and proceed slowly and
carefully making sure you understand each step along
with getting Tomcat and MySQL to play together. I have
found that I needed to redo Apache and PHP instead of the standard install
when I had to get them to go together.

http://otn.oracle.com/software/products/oracle9i/content.html Lists them
with the version numbers.
You only need install the client tools if you are accessing a database on

Ok - something weird. On boot, sendmail and sendmailclient takes
forever! Not sure why. Any ideas? I need it to start at boot because
I use it for outgoing mail from my workstation. But why is it taking so
long to start?

This resembles the old UNIX days when GUI's were just becoming fashionable -
there were a LOT of holdouts claiming that character /ascii based CLI's were
the only way to go (I was one of them but have learned my lessons here).
This way of thinking is pretty much dead. It will also

clients that can handle what has for all practical purposes become a defacto
standard in email.

/etc/xinetd.d to make sure that the applicable services have been
enabled. By default, these are usually turned off.

Oh, before I forget - make sure that the data you send to sendmail includes
both the RFC-822 headers as well as the message body. The sendmail
arguments only set the envelope sender and recipient addresses.
