You might want to check the settings under /etc/xinetd.d to make sure that the applicable services have been enabled.   By default, these are usually turned off.

Subject: telnet & ftp does not work

I have installed linux 7.2 with custom and medium firewall options. I have installed all the packages. I have added the host to the  /etc/hosts.allow file. I have a LAN configured within my house using the linksys router and using cable modem for internet access.

I cannot ftp or telnet into the Linux machine from any other machine within the same LAN segment. I can access the internet from the linux machine, I can ping into the linux machine. I have also added in the /etc/hosts.allow file following entry:

ALL : 192.168.1.

The Linux box has a fixed IP address. When i try to telnet into the machine i get the following error message:

"Could not open connectin to the host, on port 23. No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it."

when i do ftp i get following error:

frp: connect : unknown error number

Please help what i am missing in the settings?

Thankyou
