Another thing you can try is to telnet directly to the SMTP port and pretend you are a remote client. Simply issuing the command:
telnet <hostname> 25 should do the trick. If sendmail is listening you should get the SMTP greeting message. If not, you either have a local configuration problem and/or network problem (assuming you are telneting from another machine). If you get this far, you can manually issue the SMTP HELO, MAIL FROM, and RCPT TO commands (with appropriate data) to see how it responds. Chances are that if something is wrong, it will tell you about it during the smtp session.
