Well if we are building from scratch I would put in my vote for Exim, having used it for a couple of large projects, I have found that its widely maintained and isn't sorry to say stagnant like Qmail is, there hasn't been a release of Qmail past 1.03 I would say and that Exim has matured to 4.x

Cant you also just stop ipchains from starting... IPCHAINS and IPTABLES are started from the init.d process... By not starting IPCHAINS, IPTABLES should take over. That way, you can have both installed. I use both to do different things, but you can dissable one and use the other... Thoughts?
