Since you're building your mail server from source why not look at qmail instead of sendmail? It has many advantages over sendmail, one of the major ones being security. There are some great step-by-step toasters out there for building qmail on a linux system. It can be used very easily with vpopmail for vitual domains and can be configured with Spamassassin for spam control. I have also found that I like dealing with Maildirs much better than mboxs.
