I was wondering what I need to do in order to exchange the /home and /var
file systems. The way it was defaulted, the /home file system is much larget
than I would ever need, and the /var file system is much smaller than I will
need. It just so happens that they would probably be just fine if they were
reversed. I tried to move the contents from each to the other, and change
the /etc/mtab to reflect mounting the file systems to the other names, but
it appears that any changes to mtab are lost when you reboot. It seems that
the /proc directory has a mounts file that contains the mtab information,
but it is a symbolic link to a file that shows up as empty under the file
command and is read only if loaded into an editor. It also appears that the
linked file is itself a linked file and that the file name changes with each
press of the return key. First time I have ever seen anything like this, so
I thought I would check here to see if anyone might be able to tell me how I
would exchange the /home and /var directories, or just how to get the actual
/dev/hda6 to mount as /home and /dev/hda3 to mount as /var. After that, I
can move the contents.

TIA
