Hello Mark,
there's a script called "zless" that tries to provide a wrapper around less
for viewing gzip compressed files
(http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=248302)
It doesn't work when input is comming from stdin, because less does not run
the input preprocessor in such a case.

It's a database. The MySQL Administrator calls it a Schema.

After installing mysql-server I created a schema for testing, called "test".
I dropped it again using the mysql-admin, but after some time, it reappears.
It's empty, but it's back again. I removed it now for about half a dozen
times.

The default for Debian's less is to fall back to "/usr/bin/editor" instead
of simply "vi".

What about using something like the attached script to automatically bring
up the pppoe ethernet device, now that the patch was removed?
Maybe the grep lines need to be modified, but I think a script like that
would be vary handy to have.

I am unable to reproduce this behavior here. And -S really should make a
visible difference.
Is this happining on all files as soon as they contain lines longer than
then screen or do some work and some don't? What is the simplest file it
happens on?

I am not surprised that the pstree output is not displayed correctly. pstree
is using a lot of control sequences which "more" does not care about. "less"
on the other hand needs to know about what happens to the screen when
control sequences are used. (see the manpage for option -R).
