I can restore functionality by booting a live CD (e.g. grml) and running
"grub-install /dev/sda" within a chroot environment. I verified via "dd"
that the MBR stays the same during reinstall.

you want to debug/test the php bug, I would recommend that you use
2.2.13 to be sure that you don't hit the apache bug.
