[Bug 256186] Re: kernel 2.6.24-20 cannot find nvidia graphics card
Daniel, I have not had recompile the nvidia proprietary drivers when I did kernel upgrades using apt-get update/upgrade in the past. I installed module-assistant and tried what you said from the 2.6.24-21 kernel. The source compile failed. I currently have the 2.6.24-19, 2.6.24.20, and 2.6.24-21 kernels and only the 19 works (locates the nvidia video card) Karim -- kernel 2.6.24-20 cannot find nvidia graphics card https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/256186 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Hi, I can use install g77 in intrepid using hardy packages. See my post: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=7259478#post7259478 I would like to ask that g77 be supported. It is not realistic for people modify all the legacy scientific code to have it work with gfortran. I also suspect people will continue to use g77 even if gfortran replaced it completely. Leann Ogasawara, Can you first explain why you think this will work, or perhaps you give a link answering the question. I suspect this is an issue with the software package dvd+rw-tools, likely after an upgrade, as opposed to a clean install. [Bug 199040] Re: (hardy) can't write DVD-RW
I upgraded to hardy recently. I have burned rewritable dvd-rw's for my dvd/avi player successfully with growisofs -Z /dev/cdrom -J -R temp.avi I had troubles yesterday. I rollbacked growisofs to feisty and then to edgy which uses a different underlying command. The new one is a front end for genisoimage, the one for edgy was a front end for mkisofs. The roll back did not help. I thought about rolling back mkisofs but this would require me to roll back ubuntu-desktop, so I didn't. Today after getting rid of the roll backs, everything worked. I did not keep the print outs from when it failed but going up through my command history I notice that I was using the command: growisofs -Z /dev/cdrom1 -J -R temp.avi Some how did dvd was mounted as cdrom1 instead of cdrom. I generally use tab completion for this and thought it was an oddity of hardy that the dvd mounts differently. Yesterday I also tried to burn with gnome bake and k3b without success after failing the command line method. Today I only tried the command line method with success. I hope my two cents helps. [Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share
Wow, I googled ubuntu bugs and found this. I have to say I'm not impressed with the thinking (or lack their of) that went in to reporting this bug. Linux is an effective open source operating system, it is not intended to be Nike, Apple, or Microsoft. I also have concerns about the number of releases. Karmic was quite buggy and I heard many people reinstalling the system. Perhaps 2 a year is too many. I use my computer for scientific computing and managed to make it work with an upgrade without a reinstall. I had to disable ufw at grub. Currently I use Karmic and I have used ubuntu since before Dapper. Prior to that I used Gentoo, Slackware, and Debian. I have to say it is excellent work that is done in general making Linux available many people, but I caution that thinking about market share has not helped Microsoft or Apple in building an effective usable quality Operating System--it has helped them gain market share. Re: [Bug 478727] Re: karmic boot hangs after upgrade likely nvidia but unsure Bug #428920 ubuntu-bug xorg
Hi, I had the problem before I used the custom kernel, and it went away after I switched to the custom kernel. This is likely because the custom kernel disabled app armour and at the time I didn't know what the problem is but I knew how to build a custom kernel. I believe I clearly stated this on more than one occasion. I also had this problem with another machine and it was resolved by disabling app armour. There is, or was an app armour, problem that has nothing to do with the custom kernel. The custom kernel appeared to resolve the problem because it disabled app armour. I am a little annoyed with this. Best wishes, Karim On Wed, Apr 21, 2010 at 9:20 AM, Jamie Strandboge wrote: > Sorry for only getting back to this now. [Bug 478727] Re: karmic boot hangs after upgrade likely nvidia but unsure Bug #428920 ubuntu-bug xorg
Fair enough, To be clear I have not had the problem with the custom kernel, so I'm surprised that one can suggest the custom kernel was a problem. Regardless, I'll check if I can reproduce it with the newest Ubuntu karmic kernel with app armour enabled. I have been disabling app armour with all kernels. It the bug hasn't gone away with newer official Ubuntu kernels, I will launch a new bug, perhaps initramfs-tools is the incorrect location. Best, and thanks for your effort. [Bug 478727] [NEW] karmic boot hangs after upgrade likely nvidia but unsure Bug #428920 ubuntu-bug xorg
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: initramfs-tools I upgraded to Karmic last week and I am having serious problems booting. The problems appear similar to those mentioned in Bug #428920. I am not sure if this is a Nvidia xorg problem ka...@ulappy01:~$ uname -a Linux ulappy01 2.6.31-14-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 16 14:05:01 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux Nvidia driver version 185.18.36 Sometimes after a normal shutdown the computer hangs during boot. It hangs and I can do nothing. After pressing the off button and rebooting in safemode It hangs at either app-armour or on stopping ntp after hitting the power button again one or two time I manage a successful boot. I use my computer so I need it to work. I spent 30 min getting it to boot. I can provide extra information if I'm told how to get it. I'm now interested in bringing back a verbose boot so I can see where it is hanging and perhaps stopping this boot to X. Note this is intermittent. So it will boot fine several times then this odd thing happens. This is why a verbose boot is required. Also it appears the boot process has gotten much much longer with Karmic. I recall with an earlier upgrade having a problem of a long wait for network time out, that my have been Edgy or some such. [Bug 478727] Re: karmic boot hangs after upgrade likely nvidia but unsure Bug #428920 ubuntu-bug xorg
Thanks Robbie, I didn't quite follow your email but I more or less did a similar thing before reading your respones. I was looking for run level 3 and it appears the world has changed a little, so i managed to modify grub details. The boot dies at app armour, at times it has taken me over half an hour to boot, rebooting safe back until it finally works. I read there are updates to the kernel that are suppose to fix this. So, I complied the latest kernel 2.6.31.5 from kernel.org. And well it now complains about not loading app armour profiles during the boot but it always boots and seems to work. Perhaps I could have just removed app armour. There is also a comlaint about ufw at boot but shorewall appears configured correctly as it was before the upgrade. This is the first time I complied a kernel in years. I have used slackware then gentoo for a while before I got turned onto dapper and then I forgotten about things like this. This time it took hours to compile to compile the kernel. Thanks! [Bug 292606] Re: dkms - error when installing custom kernel
Hi So I have this problem now. As a result of an upgrade I had serious boot issues, I almost considered reinstalling an os. Anyways I installed a custom kernel and the latest Nvidia drivers. Hi Jamie, When I boot to the ubuntu kernel with the options text apparmor=0, it tells me there is a problem loading app armour profiles and goes past the point. This is what it says with the new kernel I compiled. I do not recall removing app armour but I did spend quite a bit of time trying to get the machine to work regularly. If I do a reboot, not simply log back it, I seem to have the two working, "with my fingers crossed" I have similar behaviour with emacs, emacs -Q, emacs -fn "fixed", and emacs "Monospace-12" I also sometimes use two monitors with nvidia. the two programs seem to both work and at times crash with one or two monitors attached. arim@ulappy01:~$ sudo apt-cache policy emacs emacs: Installed: 23.3+1-1ubuntu4 Candidate: 23.3+1-1ubuntu4 Version table: *** 23.3+1-1ubuntu4 0 500 http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric/main amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status .emacs file follows: (add-to-list 'load-path "~/.emacsloadpath/") (set-face-attribute 'default nil :height 80) (set-background-color "Black") (set-foreground-color "White") (set-cursor-color "purple") ;(set-default-font "fixed") ; use alias emacs='emacs -fn "fixed"' ;(setq font-lock-verbose nil) ;(setq lazy-lock-continuity-time 0.3) (set-frame-height (selected-frame) 48) (set-frame-width (selected-frame) 102) ;(dynamic-completion-mode) ;(defun karim-c-indent () ; (show-paren-mode) ; (setq c-basic-offset 3) ; (setq indent-tabs-mode nil) ; (c-set-offset 'substatement-open 0) ; (c-set-offset 'case-label 3) ; (c-set-offset 'statement-case-open 0)) ;(add-hook 'c-mode-common-hook 'karim-c-indent) ;; C ;(add-hook 'c-mode-hook ; (lambda () (c-set-style "karim-c-indent"))) ;; ;; ;; This section sets constants used by c-mode for formating ;; ;; (defun k-c++-indent-setup () (setq c-basic-offset 4) (setq indent-tabs-mode nil)) (add-hook 'c-mode-hook 'k-c++-indent-setup) ;;; C ;(add-hook 'c-mode-hook ;(lambda () (c-set-style "k&r"))) ;;; ESS (add-hook 'ess-mode-hook (lambda () (ess-set-style 'C++) ;; Because ;; DEF GNU BSD K&R C++ ;; ess-indent-level 2 2 8 5 4 ;; ess-continued-statement-offset2 2 8 5 4 ;; ess-brace-offset 0 0 -8 -5 -4 ;; ess-arg-function-offset 2 4 0 0 0 ;; ess-expression-offset 4 2 8 5 4 ;; ess-else-offset 0 0 0 0 0 ;; ess-close-brace-offset0 0 0 0 0 (add-hook 'local-write-file-hooks (lambda () (ess-nuke-trailing-whitespace) (setq ess-nuke-trailing-whitespace-p 'ask) ;; or even ;; (setq ess-nuke-trailing-whitespace-p t) ;;; Perl (add-hook 'perl-mode-hook (lambda () (setq perl-indent-level 4))) (global-set-key "%" 'match-paren) (defun match-paren (arg) "Go to the matching parenthesis if on parenthesis otherwise insert %." [Bug 655757] [NEW] xboard cannot find helvetica font and does not start

Actually I now have this problem with my wired connection too using gnome network manager. The network disconnects and then reconnects.
