Fair enough, To be clear I have not had the problem with the custom kernel, so I'm surprised that one can suggest the custom kernel was a problem.
Regardless, I'll check if I can reproduce it with the newest Ubuntu karmic kernel with app armour enabled. I have been disabling app armour with all kernels. It the bug hasn't gone away with newer official Ubuntu kernels, I will launch a new bug, perhaps initramfs-tools is the incorrect location. Best, and thanks for your effort.
