The calibre problem makes it similar to bug #754886, but VLC works fine
and I am not sure it is a duplicate of Bug #805303.
My system is completely up to date and I have reinstalled emacs23 which still
crashes

I would appreciate any workaround suggestions. I installed the latest
appmenu-qt, which did not help.
